What would you do with this garden?

0
0

When we moved to our current house two and half years ago I knew that there would be one thing in particular that we would miss from our old house – our garden!  Our old garden was south facing, it had a large patio area, a large wooden climbing frame, a big decking area to house our patio furniture and a large expanse of grass and no houses overlooking us.  We couldn’t stay in the house simply because of the garden and try as we might we looked for a house with something similar but we couldn’t find the house that we wanted with the garden to match so in the end we decided that the house was more important.  I miss our garden!!

Now don’t get me wrong, I know that we are lucky to have the garden that we do have now but it’s a funny shape and I just don’t ‘feel’ anything for it.  I don’t feel inspired by it and I rarely want to sit in it, even on the hottest of days.  So my question to you is . . .

What would you do with this garden?

Garden

To give you an idea of the shape it’s basically a large square with the patio sticking off one side and the playhouse behind the garage.

Garden

We are thinking of replacing the patio table and stools, the smaller table is a new Activity table for the children, we need to fix the swing and we are considering selling the playhouse and perhaps replacing it with a shed to make a den for the children which will be big enough for all the children as this one is now too small for Curly.  We are planning on extending the patio area to get rid of the gravel since Beanie Boy threw one of the stones and shattered the patio doors last year!!!!

I have never been skiing, in fact I don’t think I have ever even physically seen a skis other than on the TV and I don’t think that counts but if you are a skier then apparently carrying them around can be pretty annoying.  I often envisage a ski resort to be somewhat like a comedy sketch with people carrying skis over their shoulders and taking out bystanders each time they turn around.  Well no more, because Portaski is here to make life easier.  The Portaski is an ergonmically designed, patented wheel-sled which allows you to easily transport your skis on snow or road.  It is a pocket-sized device which attaches in seconds and bears up to 70% of the weight of your skis so it’s perfect for children and adults.

So many home projects, so little time (and money!)

I must admit when we bought out current home I thought “this is it, we have everything we need in this house” but then you move in and you live with it all for a while and you have more children, new furniture and suddenly it doesn’t feel so spacious anymore.

Home

One of our biggest issues at the moment is with our dining room/kitchen.  As a family of six we no longer fit around the kitchen table without bringing in extra chairs and ‘squashing up’.  We do have a dining table which seats 6 but it’s carpeted in there so it’s not great for our messy eaters who tend to drop chocolate milk, tomato ketchup and strawberry jam as if they are trying to create some kind of ‘floor art’.

Our dining room has become my ‘office’ and the house of homework as that is where there is the largest surface to spread out on as well as the family PC.  At Xmas and other family get-togethers we struggle to fit everyone in as you can see from our make-do dining room last Christmas.

Dining kitchenOur ‘dream’ is to knock down the wall between our kitchen and dining room to create one large kitchen/diner and tile from the front door all the way through to the kitchen/diner to make everywhere cleaner and easier to maintain.  This would enable us to buy a dining table which extends so as to accomodate extended family on special occasions and to make life easier for me as the children get older.  I would be able to get on with my jobs in the kitchen whilst keeping an eye on them doing their homework.  I think as a family these days you need that kind of open-plan living to keep your family dining/working and just being together.

In addition to that we need to replace the carpets in the bathrooms with floor tiles, install built-in wardrobes in our bedroom to complete our bedroom makeover which we started earlier this year and the playroom is starting to look tired too so we need to rethink what we do in there but it all takes time and money that at the moment we just don’t have.

If you have any home improvements that you could do with a little help with in getting started then Swinton are the guys for you as they are looking to help people and the communities they live in by offering cash prizes of up to £5,000 to complete projects that matter to them this summer. Starting from Monday this week, Swinton will run four exciting competitions over a five-week period: the home project (week one), the garden project (week two), the DIY neighbour project (week three) and the community project (week four).

Here’s the top line detail of this week’s competition:

  • Nominate a home project you’d like to see completed in your home for the chance to win £1,000
  • All entries will automatically be entered in to our prize draw to win £100
  • Winners will be chosen at the end of this week and contacted via email

Readers submit their entries here by filing out our competition form to nominate a home project they’d like to see completed this summer. Please also see T&Cs.

Creating ambience with Philips myGarden Solar lights

Now that the Summer holidays are upon us and we are mostly enjoying some warmer weather it makes you want to spend more time outside in the garden right?  Ordinarily this would be the case, but you see I have a problem with our garden.  I don’t like it!

The garden at our previous house was large, with a big patio area, a barked play area for the children with huge wooden climbing frame, a large shed, a decked area with patio furniture, a large grass area for the children to have a kick-about and a side passage to hide away all the stinky wheelie bins.  Our old garden was a large rectangular shape, so it felt open and spacious.  This garden, is a silly shape with shady areas, lots of manhole/utility covers and I just don’t like it.  We have lived here for nearly 4 years now and other than laying some turf, barking the area behind the garage for the children’s toys and sticking a huge trampoline into one corner for the children we really haven’t done a lot with it at all.  It’s not a garden we enjoy sitting in, it’s not great for BBQ’s or socialising so we tend to stick to the house.

Garden makeover

Obviously the children play in the garden and they love it but they will often ask me to sit outside to watch them but it’s just not a place to relax in so we are starting to put some ideas together to make our garden somewhere that we want to be; somewhere that we want to spend some time with the children.

Our only outside light up until now has been the security light at the back door which isn’t exactly mood setting, it just serves a purpose but we have been looking in B&Q to get some ideas of what we want to do and then as if my magic our garden fairy landed in the form of an email from Philips asking if we would be interested in reviewing a light from their myGarden Solar range.  When I think of ‘solar’ lighting I often think of those lights which just kind of ‘glow’ as opposed to providing any light which is worthwhile but the myGarden Solar range are brilliant.    They offer a good selection of wall lights, ceiling lights, floor lights and pedestal lights.  We chose this anthracite wall light with motion sensor technology.

Philips myGarden Solar Light

Since the light is powered by the sun, there are no need for power cables or messing with electrics to fit it.  Hubby just drilled a couple of holes in the garage wall, mounted it and we were ready to go.  It was out of the box and installed on the wall in less than 10 minutes, in fact I think it took Hubby longer to find the drill bit in the garage than it did to put the light up.  I have to admit the light does look a little odd when fixed to the wall because it looks like it is hanging away from the wall but it is actually securely fixed, it’s just the angle of the fixings.  It has switches on the side so that you can switch it on and off manually or you can leave it so that it comes on when it detects movement.  This makes it a great light to welcome you home when the darker nights start to creep in again.

The thing about the Wall Light which impressed us the most was the light emitted.  As I mentioned previously I have always associated solar lights with a bit of a pointless glow but the Philips myGarden Wall Light gives off a really good light and providing the weather conditions have been bright it will continue to provide good light for up to 6 hours.  If it has been a little more overcast, the light is likely to last around 2 hours BUT it won’t cost you a penny other than the initial outlay of the light itself which is very competitively priced against electricity-powered garden lights.

Now that we have tried this one, we have agreed that we will definitely be buying more to make our garden a little more inviting.  Have you tried solar lighting before?

Kärcher Oscillating Sprinkler and Primo Flex Hose Review

0

When it comes to gardening, I leave it all to Hubby.  Don’t get me wrong I love to see the garden looking nice but other than that it’s his domain.  The Beans (especially Little Bean) are starting to take a keen interest in it too so I think it’s nice for them to have a shared interest.

When we moved into house four years ago our garden was nothing but a big muddy mess until we were kindly donated some turf by a friend who had also bought a new home but didn’t want the turf.  We did a little turf transplantation and laid it in our back garden.  To our joy the majority of it took well and has only needed minor patching up ever since but one thing we have really suffered with is large cracks appearing throughout the summer.  The cracks are so big the Beans have often tripped up and twisted their ankles in them so Hubby has been filling up the cracks and laying grass seed in an effort to repair it.

Karcher Oscillating Sprinkler

At the start of the summer we were sent the Karcher Oscillating Sprinkler and Primo Flex Hose to review and finally this weekend we were home long enough to put it to the test.  When the Oscillating Sprinkler arrived I could see the look of relief on his face as he would no longer have to stand out in the garden each even watering the grass with just a watering can to help him.  I think the Beans will also get a lot of fun out of the Sprinkler too, we just need the hot weather to return.

Setting up the Karcher Oscillating Sprinkler and Primo Flex Hose was easy, all I had to do was sit inside and watch as Hubby did all the hard work!  It took him just a few minutes to unravel the hose and attach it to the tap in our utility room with a universal hose connector which he purchased from our local DIY store.  He attached the other end of the hose to the Sprinkler and he was ready to go.

The Sprinkler has a number of settings depending on what you want it to do for you, you can set it to oscillate fully or just over a small area, you can open all jets or just use a couple, all by just simply clicking the nozzle covers. It has a splash guard cover which you can pop up whilst you set up the Sprinkler to save you getting a shower at the same time.  There is a spike under the base which can be pushed down into the ground to stop the Sprinkler from moving (although ours hasn’t moved when in use).  The Sprinkler features adjustable flow control enabling it to cover up to 320 m2.

The Primo Flex hose is a 3 layer garden hose, pressure-resistant, reinforced braided, free of phthalates, cadmium, barium and lead, it is harmless to health. The weather-resistant, UV-proof outer layer protects the material, and an opaque interlayer prevents algae formation in the hose. Bursting pressure 24 bar.  The hose has an operating temperature range of -20 to 65 °C and has a 12 year guarantee.
Kärcher garden hoses are extremely flexible, durable and non-kinking. The advantages are clear: extremely durable and easy to handle.

Karcher’s watering Ambassador is Expert Gardener, Diarmuid Gavin who has recorded some great informative videos on how to get the best of our your garden and has even answered a few questions.  I like this video about how to encourage insects into your garden to help teach your children.  I’m particularly interested in encouraging butterflies into ours.

What outdoor toys do you have in your garden?

0
0

I’ve said it before and I shall say it again, our Beans thrive on being outdoors. It’s where they are happiest. All four Beans are very ‘spirited’ so they always seem to have a mass of excess energy they need to get out of their system and so they love it when the garden becomes more accessible in the drier months.

Outdoor toys

We feel it’s time to update our outdoor play space for the children but we are a little stunted in our own imagination. What outdoor toys do you have that your children can’t get enough of? Which toys would you recommend and which would you say to avoid?

Time to say goodbye Trampoline?

For the past 4 years we have had a 10ft trampoline in our garden which the Beans love BUT it frightens the life out of us because of how crazy they are on it. After too many near misses when they would bounce together we made the decision to only allow one at a time on the trampoline but that seems to have taken the fun out of it for the Beans. These days they either sneak onto it together until they get told to get off or they bounce for 2-3 minutes alone and get off. We have made the decision to sell the trampoline now and update the garden with some new garden toys but we don’t really know what to go for.

Time to harness their imagination?

The Beans have great imagination and love role play, they will often turn structures into Pirate Ships or Battle Stations or houses so we would love to find something to harness that imagination. We have just put a small climbing frame into the garden for the small boys but it’s a bit too small for Curly and Little Bean so we have been considering buying a larger climbing frame to replace the trampoline.

The slide and swing are now a good 2-3 years old and have started to rust so I think it’s time to replace them but do we go for separates or for an all-in-one climbing frame/swing/slide structure?

Future plans . . .

Behind our double garage we have a long thin spit of land which is currently covered in bark and is pretty much where we ‘dump’ the children’s toys at the end of each day to protect the grass or to allow Hubby to cut the grass. We have been watching a few videos on YouTube and fancy having a go at building a clubhouse for the Beans out of pallets, perhaps something along the lines of the den which George Clarke unveiled on Amazing Spaces Series 3 Episode 7 for his children at the bottom of his garden.

An afternoon of inspiration at the #ArgosGardenParty

I have never made secret of the fact that we are yet to find the love for our garden since we moved here over four and a half years ago.  It doesn’t have a personality, it looks like a really boring kids playground.  Don’t get me wrong here, I have no problem at all with handing over our garden to the Beans because they love being outdoors but it doesn’t really look that interesting or inviting for them either and so it needs to change.

#ArgosGardenParty

#ArgosGardenParty

At the weekend we had a very enjoyable day just outside St Neots in Cambridgeshire as guests at the #ArgosGardenParty.  We had our reservations about the good old English weather but I’m delighted to say that it stayed dry and the sun even came out to warm us all up.  The Garden Party was held in the beautiful garden of a quaint cottage in a village.  It was like a dream garden for the children with so many different areas to explore – starting off first with the sandpit and playhouse.  There’s nothing like spending time in someone else’s beautiful garden to make you come home and want to change things but when you are also given lots of great garden and outdoor fun tips from the experts, well it makes you all the more inspired!

#ArgosGardenParty

First off we were introduced to Jen Stanbrook; interiors writer, blogger and presenter, with an insatiable love of all things home.  Jen showed us some the creative ways you can use lighting to add personality to your garden, to make features of certain areas or to add depth and ambience.  We had already made a start in our garden with a Philips myGarden Solar PIR light over the patio area and will definitely be adding further lights to bring the garden to life at night.

#ArgosGardenParty

Next up, Jen invited us to create our own Decopatch Lanterns.  She gave each of us a glass jar and some decopatch paper so that we could create our own mini lanterns to hang in the garden.  This was such a fun and inexpensive craft which the whole family were able to get involved in and the Beans all loved it, even Hubby got stuck right in.  Such an exciting lot, three of them chose the same paper!

#ArgosGardenParty

#ArgosGardenParty

After Jen’s workshop we had a break for lunch ‘Afternoon Tea’ style with china teacups and saucers, sandwich fingers and cakes before heading over to the BBQ to meet with Kerstin Rodgers from Ms Marmite Lover.  Kerstin showed us a few quick and easy Meat-free BBQ ideas which were right up my street.  I’m not overly keen on most meats so I don’t tend to eat a lot at BBQs.  My favourite had to be Halloumi in Sweet Chilli Peppers, I could have finished off the platter all by myself and the tip about grating lime zest into butter to add flavour to corn on the cob – genius!  Incidentally, I was just having a look around on Ms Marmite Lover and happened to see that she has released her own cookbook V is for Vegan which looks amazing!!

#ArgosGardenParty

#ArgosGardenParty

Finally, we got our hands dirty with the lovely Dawn Isaac, RHS Chelsea Medal-Winning Garden Designer, Mum, writer, blogger and horticultural advisor on Mr Bloom’s Nursery!!!  Dawn was brilliant with the Beans, Little Bean got stuck right in creating her own mini vegetable patch in a colander.  The moment Little Bean mentioned to be Beanie Boy there were strawberry plants, he was in there like a shot and created his own.  Dawn also kitted the Beans out with a watering can each and some special craft pens so they could decorate them.  She was full of great ideas for getting the children involved in the garden which is something that our Beans really love to do.  It reminded me of some seeds I bought last year so I’m keen to get them out soon and get planting.

#ArgosGardenParty

We came away from the #ArgosGardenParty with great big smiles on our faces, the Beans said that it was one of the best events they had been to – even Curly who I thought might have been a little too old as a child at the event said that he’d had a ball.  We had made and been given so much that we weren’t too sure how we were going to transport it and the four children back on the train but luckily for us Michelle from LittleMissAdventures was also attending the event and lives just down the road from me so she offered to take our things home for us.

#ArgosGardenParty

I felt so inspired by the party I wanted to go home and turf everything out of our garden and get started on it straight away.  I have already had a clearout in the garden and have started a Pinterest board to start pulling ideas together of what we want to do.  Now I just need to summon the garden fairies to help make it happen.

DISCLAIMER: Our travel expenses were covered and we were able to bring home all of the items that we had created as well as a goodie bag.  I was under no obligation to write this post.  All words, images and opinions are my own and may not be copied without my permission.

Loving Phase 1 of our Garden Makeover!

0
0

Now I’m sure if Hubby sees this post, he’ll be thinking ‘Phase 1? I thought we had finished??’ which to some degree we have but you know what us women are like, we always want ‘more’ so there will be a Phase 2, I’m just not sure when Phase 2 will take effect.

Garden makeover

We have lived in our house for nearly 5 years now and so far the garden has been mostly neglected.  When we moved in it was a big mud pile but then thankfully we were able to turf it thanks to a friend who didn’t want her turf.  For the last 2-3 years our garden was dominated by the Beans’ 10ft trampoline but at the start of the Summer we decided it was time to dispense with that as the accidents were happening all too often.

Looking through magazines I had a flash of inspiration that began with our fences.  I was fed up of staring at the same old Red Cedar painted fences that looked like every other garden fence.  I wanted to look out and see a modern fence, a modern garden where we want to spend time as a family, not just an outdoor toy dumping ground for the Beans.  I bought some Cuprinol Fence Paint in Natural Stone and we set to work on painting the fences.  The first coat soaked straight into the fences giving them a ‘washed’ look but we wanted solid colour so it took another coat to get the colour we wanted.  Even just that change of colour made a huge difference, even on a rainy day it looked bright and sunny in our garden, it made the garden feel bigger and more inviting but we hadn’t finished yet.

Garden Makeover

To bring our fences to life I chose a Lime Green accent paint to go on all of the cross bars of the fences to create stripes around the garden and I hope you’ll agree, it looks brilliant!  Our fences have come to life and have that modern feel that I was hoping for.

Garden Makeover

Next up laid new turf where the trampoline used to be and had our patio extended to give us a larger outdoor seating area.  We built our own DIY Pallet Bar out of reclaimed pallets and the leftover fence paint.  For full instructions on how to do this, head over to Wayfair to see my ‘How To’ guide.  The Pallet Bar is the perfect place to stand garden ornaments, plants, tealights at night or a large glass of wine!!!

Garden Makeover

We created a new patio seating area with the lovely Rattan Sofa Set from Wayfair adding colour with cushions from our local garden centre.  We added further colour to our fence during the day and light to it at night with our Solar Powered Fairy Lights from Argos.  We still want to find  modern looking patio heater to stand in the corner of the patio as it does get chilly out there quickly.  I bought a beautiful Euonymous Jap Bravo tree to stand near the chairs for a bit of foliage and colour.

Garden Makeover

Next up we are hoping to build a low-level fence to divide the patio area from the garden with a little gate and to protect the chairs from any wayward footballs flying around.  We are also hoping to find play equipment that will service all four children without dominating the garden because the swing is a constant bone of contention between the four of them.

Finally, behind our garden we have a long thin spit of land which we think is just crying out to become an ‘outbuilding’ of some description, perhaps a ‘den’ for the Beans or a garden office for me?!  But like I said, that might have to wait for another year . . .
